Plug-in Hybrid Electric School Bus Project

Welcome to the Plug-in Hybrid Electric School Bus Project!

A collaborative effort led by Advanced Energy, this project sought to transform the nation’s school bus market by introducing plug-in hybrid technology. Our everyday means of transportation is rapidly changing and so do we as a nation. Today, we are pioneering the adaptation of electrified transportation. The Plug-In Hybrid Electric School Bus Project successfully bridged the gap between research and development, certifying electric vehicle solutions in the marketplace.

Today, there are sixteen Plug-In Hybrid Electric School Buses located across the nation in Advanced Energy’s PHESB project. Even more PHESBs have been deployed throughout the country, but are not monitored as part of Advanced Energy’s project. In 2009, Navistar was awarded a three-year grant by the Department of Energy for the development of a second-generation PHESB.
