Bridging the Gap between Assessment and Implementation

Our team of engineering experts conducts real-world assessments, field testing, lab testing and research, challenging our clients to think differently about energy usage. Our testing capabilities include:

  • Monitoring
    • Lighting, fans, process heating
    • Building power/energy
    • Fuel cells
    • On-site HVAC equipment power/energy
    • Wireless Installations in remote locations
    • Electric vehicle charging stations
    • Vehicle performance
    • Home energy management/monitoring systems
    • Renewable energy power availability

Put Our Services to the Test

We provide third-party independent validation testing for emerging technologies that have an impact in the residential, commercial and industrial markets, testing energy efficient devices such as:

  • Motors and Drives
  • Regrigeration oil additives
  • Power factor (PF) correction capacitors
  • LED lighting and advanced listing
  • Lighting controllers
  • Voltage controllers
  • Advanced chiller and cooling technologies
  • Process heating (IR, UV, RF, Convection
  • Plug load management technologies

Progressive Equipment

Whether testing occurs in our lab, your business or in the field, we utilize innovative equipment in our testing protocols. Additionally, our tools allow us to perform almost real-time measurement and verification. Our wide-range of equipment includes:

  • Labview: provides us with versatile and adaptable testing, data and instrument control, supporting various measurements, including accelerated life testing
  • HOBO® Data Loggers: with a wide range of data logging instruments, we can monitor and measure energy and temperature
  • Yokogawa DL850 Scopecorder: provides the ability to capture eight channels of high-speed, high resolution waveforms and to see events in real-time.
  • Yokagawa WT3000: allows for testing and measuring DC and high AC frequency ranges, as well as measuring input and output simultaneously; shows voltage and current waveforms, harmonics and validation of total harmonic distortion.
  • Flux 2D Motor Design Software: finite element software used to assist customers with custom motor designs and improvements.

Device Testing

We are often asked to validate the claims of energy savings boxes that attach to existing loads, such as motors or lighting systems or individual circuits in a home or business. The vendors for these devices typically claim large energy reductions, cost savings or extended equipment life. We have found many of these devices are actually power factor correction capacitors. (A good explanation of power factor can be found on Wikipedia or from NIST).

Our testing to date has found real energy reductions from such devices are negligible. Also, the vast majority of electric customers do not pay for low power factor. Therefore, correcting power factor does not result in measurable cost savings to the customer. Also note that ENERGY STAR® does not certify such devices.

We will test such devices in our lab using our standard methods, subject to our standard pricing, upon request.
